For long service from your shaving brush, do not boil the brush because it has already been sterilized. Lather lightly without pressure. Rinse the shaving brush thoroughly after use and remove all excess moisture. Leave the shaving brush in the open to dry. Never enclose a damp brush.

Colonel Ichabod Conk Products, Inc., with headquarters in New Mexico, has sold quality “gentlemen’s grooming products” for over 150 years.

More details about this shaving brush: Genuine badger hair makes the best quality shaving brushes. Badger hair easily absorbs hot water, and is soft and comfortable when brushed on the face, as compared to less-expensive brushes made of stiffer boar’s hair (some people do prefer the stiffer boar bristle, however).

When you are ready to shave soak your brush in hot water (ideally just the bristles). Allow the excess water to drain from the bristles, then gently work up some lather with your brush on your soap. Badger hair efficiently releases hot water and lather together as it is brushed up and down the face, making a thick, rich, opaque layer of lather (much better lather than a person can make with fingertips alone.) A shaving brush also gently cleans the skin before shaving. The hot water softens the whiskers. The up and down brushing makes the whiskers stand straight up in the thick lather, so the shaving blade cuts the whiskers off most effectively.

After finishing your shave, thoroughly rinse the brush and store it in a holder with the bristles down and the handle up. This will allow the brush to dry and give many years of effective use. Holders can range from very simple to quite elaborate.

Helpful hints for shaving with a safety razor: Once the soap lather is applied to the face with your shaving brush, now it’s time to get down to the business at hand, namely shaving!! Shaving should always be done in the direction the whiskers grow or lay on the face. This is usually done gently pulling the razor down the face and neck. Notice we said gently. Most of us have gotten used to the disposable blades, which are not nearly as sharp and thin, and require more pressure against the face. After shaving with your safety razor for a period of time, if you feel that you would like a slightly closer shave, one can gently shave in the opposite direction. However those just starting out, people with more sensitive skin, or those prone to ingrown hairs should perhaps not avail themselves of this option as redness and razor burn are likely to happen. Just remember, the experience of fine shaving requires slower, careful, gentle strokes. Don’t press down!! It is possible that while re-learning(!) the art of shaving, a nick or two is likely to happen to all of us. It’s just your face telling you to wake up and pay attention to the wonders of fine shaving!
