Description

The D.H. Russell Belt Knife R1S is handmade by Grohmann Knives. This is the original design that started it all. The unique elliptical blade lessens cutting drag. This general-purpose fixed blade outdoor knife is great for dressing game. Palm and finger fitting “offset” handle for safe grip. Blade is approximately 4″ x 1″, made of 1/8″ stock. Total knife length is 8-1/2″.

Grohmann Knives Limited is a small family business with a big reputation. Their story began before the second World War. A commercial buyer from Quebec traveled once a year to a specific factory in Germany to buy pocketknives. This buyer would urge Rudolph Grohmann to come to Canada.

He also promised him help to get started. Mr. Grohmann would always decline but after the war, the political situation grew desperate and in 1949 Rudolph Grohmann accepted the offer. Within a year, Grohmann and his family arrived in Nova Scotia at the invitation of the provincial government-funded Pictou Cutlery.

The Government shut down the Pictou factory and Mr. Grohmann went to work at another factory. However, Mr. Grohmann was determined to make knives. He built a garage workshop and began producing and engraving folding knives designed by himself.

Today many people come to visit Canada for the fine fishing, camping, and hunting. There were various knives of foreign designs in the shops in the area. The visitors and also many of the best-known woodsmen felt that there should be a truly Canadian designed knife. that would challenge the traditionally designed knives of the past.

Therefore, a concerned Canadian heeded the call and decided he wanted to be a part of it. Mr. Deane H Russell of Ottawa Ontario invited Canadian outdoor writers to cooperate in conducting national scale inquiries among professional woodsmen and experienced sportsmen. This was an effort to discover the features most desired in a modern outdoor knife.

Through a newspaper article Mr. Grohmann met with Mr. Deane H Russell. And then together they set out to design a truly Canadian knife. After field testing through hunters and trappers across the north, the DH Russell Best Knife #1 was born Then came the #2, D.H. Russell Trout and Bird Knife. Then Grohmann and Russell created three more models together, the #2, #3 and #4.
