An ink knife is a spatula for mixing printing ink. It is a tool that a pressman uses to dig the ink out of a can. Mixing a special color is also another use. Making sure the ink is against the fountain ball roller.

Ink Knives come in various shapes and sizes. Most of these knives come in metal with a wooden handle but some are also made in plastic. They are both wide and short and long and narrow.

There are many choices for ink knives on the market. Heimerdinger carries the Dexter-Russell brand and they are metal with wood handles.

The longer, more flexible metal knives are great for mixing and spreading ink onto the screen. The length of the knife should compliment the container used for mixing the ink.

A good mixing blade tapers nicely (thicker to thinner) from the handle to the tip of the blade. We recommend investing in good, quality knives.

Generally, the metal knives have wooden or resin-type handles. Here are some pointers when choosing an ink knife. The long knives are good for mixing and spreading.

Cheaper knives are good but good quality knives will last a long time. Many ink specialists at any production shop,  have invested in quality tools. They seldom lose sight of their favorite knives.
