For long service from your shaving brush, do not boil the brush because it has already been sterilized. Lather lightly without pressure. Rinse the shaving brush thoroughly after use and remove all excess moisture. Ideally, leave the shaving brush in the open to dry. When you are traveling, the plastic container has a small air hole for ventilation, but it is highly desirable when you arrive at a destination to take the brush out to let it air dry. This preserves the bristles.

Genuine badger hair makes the best quality shaving brushes. Badger hair easily absorbs hot water, and is soft and comfortable when brushed on the face, as compared to less-expensive brushes made of stiffer boar’s hair. When you are ready to shave soak your brush in hot water, ideally just the bristles. Allow the excess water to drain from the bristles, then gently work up some lather with the brush on your soap. Badger hair efficiently releases hot water and lather together as it is brushed up and down the face, making a thick, rich, opaque layer of lather This is much better lather than a person can make with fingertips alone. A shaving brush also gently cleans the skin before shaving. The hot water softens the whiskers. The up and down brushing makes the whiskers stand straight up in the thick lather, so the shaving blade cuts the whiskers off most effectively.

Helpful hints for shaving with a safety razor: Once the soap lather is applied to the face with your shaving brush, now it’s time to get down to the business at hand… shaving. Shaving should always be done in the direction the whiskers grow or lay on the face. This is usually done gently pulling the razor down the face and neck. Notice we said gently. Most of us have gotten used to the disposable blades, which are not nearly as sharp and thin, and require more pressure against the face. After shaving with your safety razor for a period of time, if you feel that you would like a slightly closer shave, one can gently shave in the opposite direction. However those just starting out, people with more sensitive skin, or those prone to ingrown hairs should perhaps not avail themselves of this option as redness and razor burn are likely to occur. Just remember, the experience of fine shaving requires slower, more careful, and more gentle strokes. Don’t press down! It is possible that while re-learning the art of shaving, a nick or two is likely to happen.. It is just your face telling you to wake up and pay attention to the wonders of fine shaving!
