John Russell established The John Russell Company in Greenfield, MA in 1834. He built the factory on the banks of the Green River where he used the water to provide power. Finally, a merger occurred in 1933. Thus the two companies became the Russell Harrington Cutlery Company. Finally in 2001, the company changed its name to Dexter-Russell, Inc. to reflect its history.
