John Russell was born in Greenfield, Mass. but at the age of 21 he went to Georgia and got into the cotton business. He amassed enough money and he could quit the business after about a dozen years. After his After his marriage he eventually moved back to Greenfield.

After a couple of years of contemplating his next move, Russell decided to go into the cutlery business. At that point the cutlery business was dominated by the industry in Sheffield, England. At the time, cutlery manufacturers there led the world and set the standard for excellence.

John Russell felt he could do better and established J. Russell & Co. At first he focused on making ax heads and chisels. Then by the early 1940s, Russell had started the manufacturing of high quality hunting knifes.

A Green River Works knife is made in the U.S. by Russell Harrington, this American Carbon Steel blade has a rugged, handmade look. This is an old pattern and a proven classic (circa 1834), dating back to a time when frugal people purchased a knife or two and used them for everything.

History buffs will recognize the Russell trademark that was the accepted mark of quality during the years when the West of being opened.
