humble beginnings

Our story began in 1861 when August Heimerdinger, our great-great-grandfather, established the business in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. A skilled craftsman born in Germany, August created and repaired scissors, butcher knives, and even sewing machines in his first shop. Over the decades, each generation of the Heimerdinger family has built on this foundation, innovating and adapting to meet the needs of their time.

As the years passed, our family business grew, with each generation adding their unique contributions. August’s son, W.C. Heimerdinger, expanded the product line to include barber and beauty supplies in the 1920s. Later, W.G. Heimerdinger patented innovative grass shears and led the company into manufacturing tools like pruning and hedge shears.

Through changing times and evolving needs, our focus shifted from manufacturing to offering premium cutlery, specialty tools, and sharpening services. Despite these changes, the heart of Heimerdinger Cutlery has always been our unwavering commitment to quality and customer service.
