Henry Harrington established The Harrington Cutlery Company in 1818. It was in Southbridge, Massachusetts. As a matter of fact, he was a New England craftsman and inventor. Of course The Harrington Cutlery company was the first cutlery manufacturing company in the United States. Additionally, Harrington manufactured many types of implements. These included surgical equipment and shoe knives.

In addition, firearms were equally important products. The Dexter trade name was introduced in 1884. Mr. Harrington named it after one of his sons, Dexter. The Dexter line of kitchen and table cutlery became known for its high quality. Housewives and Chefs both used the Dexter brand knives.

John Russell established The John Russell Company in Greenfield, MA in 1834. He built the factory on the banks of the Green River so he could use the water for power. He first produced chisels and ax heads. Additionally, as the company grew, he began to produce large quantities of high-quality hunting knives.

Finally, a merger occurred in 1933. Thus, the two companies became the Russell Harrington Cutlery Company. Finally in 2001, the company changed its name to Dexter-Russell, Inc. to reflect its history.
