When speaking about wood, figure refers to the appearance of wood. In other words, when seen on a longitudinal surface (side-grain): a “figured wood” is not plain. Many woods have a figure such as Curly Maple.

This wood is a “quilted maple” You can see a wavy pattern similar to ripples .This pattern can be found in nearly all Acer species. The pattern is evident when the wood is quartersawn and not as evident when it is flatsawn.

Curly Maple Wood Block comes in a prime white color. Curly Maple has been a  favorite among furniture makes since Colonial day. Shoemakers often used maple to make the heels of many women’s shoes until the turn of the century.

This is a solid piece. This is a good piece to use for a hidden tang handle. Remember the “eyes” in this wood can be a challenge. Using the wrong tool can result in grain tear-out. Also, more “eyes” in the lumber the weaker the wood tends to be.
